Ellie Marx Memorial Scholarship for String Instruments
Rules & Procedure
- The Ellie Marx Memorial Scholarship for String Instruments is awarded biennially to a South African citizen for local or international music study.
- Candidates must be younger than 25 years of age on 1 January of the year of registration.
- The scholarship is offered to an exceptionally talented student who must have studied a string instrument (violin, viola, cello, or double bass) in South Africa for at least three years.
- Only students of current and paid-up members of the SASMT are allowed to enter.
- The scholarship amount is dependent on current economic circumstances. For 2007, the scholarship has a guaranteed minimum value of R4,000.
- The scholarship will only be paid out to the institution’s financial office after the candidate’s registration had been confirmed.
- Application on behalf of an outstanding student should be made on the prescribed form by the student’s practical teacher and should be accompanied by:
(i) a written recommendation from the teacher;
(ii) a certified copy of the candidate’s identity document;
(iii) a full curriculum vitae;
(iv) a sound recording as specified below; and
(v) an affidavit that the sound recording was made by the student and has not been edited. - The sound recording (tape or CD) must consist of the unedited performance of at least one movement of an unaccompanied work by JS Bach; one movement from a concerto (with either piano or orchestral accompaniment); and a work of the student's own choice. The quality of the recording could influence the result. Recordings will not be returned after adjudication.
- The Executive Committee of the SASMT will appoint a panel of adjudicators. Their decision is final and no correspondence of any kind will be entered into after the announcement of the winner. The adjudicators may decide not to make an award if the standard of entries is not satisfactory.
- The closing date for entries is 31 October 2006 and the winner will be announced by 30 November 2006.
- The winner may be invited to perform during the SASMT biennial Conference during March/April 2007, in which case a reasonable contribution will be made towards travel costs.
