Gladwell Scholarship for Music Performance
Rules & Procedure
- The Gladwell Scholarship for Performance is awarded biennially to a South African citizen for local or international music study.
- Candidates must be younger than 25 years of age on 1 January of the year of registration.
- The minimum proficiency required is a proven practical standard of at least Grade 8.
- Only students of current and paid-up members of the SASMT are allowed to enter.
- The scholarship amount is dependent on current economic circumstances. For 2007, the scholarship has a guaranteed minimum value of R5,000.
- The scholarship will only be paid out to the institution’s financial office after the candidate’s registration had been confirmed.
- Each entry must include:
(i) the completed entry form;
(ii) a certified copy of the candidate’s identity document;
(iii) a written recommendation from the candidate's practical teacher for 2007;
(iv) a full curriculum vitae; and
(v) a video recording as specified below. - The video recording (VHS or DVD) must consist of the unedited performance of a minimum of two contrasting works from at least two style periods with a total duration of 12–15 minutes. The name and instrument of the candidate must be stated in a clearly audible voice at the beginning of the recording. The quality of the recording could influence the result. Recordings will not be returned after adjudication.
- The Executive Committee of the SASMT will appoint a panel of adjudicators. Their decision is final and no correspondence of any kind will be entered into after the announcement of the winner. The adjudicators may decide not to make an award if the standard of entries is not satisfactory.
- The closing date for entries is 31 October 2006 and the winner will be announced by 30 November 2006.
- The winner may be invited to perform during the SASMT biennial Conference during March/April 2007, in which case a reasonable contribution will be made towards travel costs.
